ADHD a short simile

Okay, you want to know what ADHD REALLY is?

Imagine in your mind there is a room.

Within that room is a filing cabinet.

In a person without ADHD their filing cabinet is filled with files.

Each file is tabbed, now these files contain EVERYTHING you need to know. Memories/things to do/what you need to do/etc?

A person with ADHD?

Their filing cabinet is open and ALL the files are spinning in the air. There’s an open window, occasionally a file slips out NEVER TO BE SEEN AGAIN, but mostly theses files just spin, continuously.

Now, medication helps, in that it freezes those files, so you can look at them and pick the one you need. But we need MORE than medication to put them back in the filing cabinet. Routines help us put them back in the cabinet and various other kinds of therapy, help us tab those files and finally be able to close that cabinet and hopefully have a less confusing time of navigating life.

So if your loved one IS a sufferer of this condition, please keep this in mind. We don’t deliberately forget appointments. We don’t deliberately crash into life and mess up repeatedly. We just can’t see the wood for the trees (or should that be the filing cabinet for  the flying papers) Medication is helpful but it is NEVER enough.

Seeing as many medical practitioners favour one or the other. It is difficult for us to be the best “us” we can be, but we try. It may appear to you like we don’t, but you need to understand sometimes we’ve been trying too long and sometimes we DO quit trying, if that is the case, please encourage us, rather than give up on us. Because you have no idea of HOW difficult it is, when you WANT to be normal but you JUST can’t.

Because, sometimes EVEN WE do not know that if we find a way of sorting out that filing cabinet? Our filing cabinets are the Porsches of the filing cabinet world. I mean top of the range, outstanding, cabinet EVERYONE wishes they had. BUT FIRST WE NEED TO SORT OUT THAT FLYING PAPER THING.

We need people to close that window and after the medication stops the files flying, we need people to help us find each folder and organise their contents. NOTHING gets us through this process faster than LOVE and PATIENCE

We ask for this, because that filing cabinet is worth more than all the other closed filing cabinets in the building! And its contents once organised can produce a billion other ‘Porsche’ filing cabinets!

Regardless of whether you are a sufferer or a sufferers loved one. If you keep the filing cabinet simile in mind when dealing with us, it will help significantly! If your a sufferer, don’t give yourself a hard time, remember that simile and work on sorting out your cabinet 😉

A single mother of 3 adult children. I am a writer, with ADHD focused atm on a novella concerning ho mental health affects not just the mentally ill but society as a whole. A Christian, my inspiration is drawn from the love of the almighty and my own experiences with mental health and how only through self-love and acceptance and identifying with Christ as who you are IN Him, can you navigate its pitfalls! I'm not where I want to be but thank God I'm not where I used to be!
